Celebration of diversity
A CELEBRATION of unity in diversity through the music and dance of different faith cultures is coming to Horsham on Saturday October 9.
Organised by the Horsham Interfaith Forum (HIFF), it will be an evening of music and dance from a number of different faith traditions.
Music is often a bridge which can connect people at a level beyond language and conversation. Crossing Boundaries aims to draw together people of all age groups to enjoy an unusual variety of music and to encourage a better understanding of the different faith cultures in the local community.
The musicians and dancers who will perform during the evening include:
The captivating Silk Roads ensemble from the Sufi Muslim tradition. Silk Roads brings together musicians inspired by an intuitive, spiritual approach to world music. They will perform in a classic Sufi combination of daf (frame-drum), ney (reed-flute), and voice. Khaled Hakim learnt to play the daf and ilahis (Turkish spiritual songs) in the ceremonies of a Sufi Order. Paul Cheneour has major film credits such as 6th Happiness and Hideous Kinky, and documentary credits such as BBC2's Egyptian Journeys. He plays European flutes, Indian bamboo flutes, or Turkish and Arabic neys, encompassing eastern and western music. See http://silkroads.co.uk
One of the leading players in the world of Jewish klezmer music who has toured throughout Britain and Europe, Merlin Shepherd will play his clarinet in a duo with an accordion. 'Klezmer' is the Jewish instrumental folk music of Eastern Europe. Merlin has played with various ensembles including Frank London's Klezmer Brass Allstars and the Burning Bush. The locally acclaimed Voice from the Coal Shed Gospel Choir led by Kaytie Harding, is in the Christian tradition. Kaytie is a professional singer, equally at home in with jazz, gospel and the classical soprano repertoire. She is passionate about giving people the freedom to enjoy singing and leads a number of projects in the Horsham area, including the Gospel Choir. See www.voicefromthecoalshed.com
Newly formed West London Baha'i Choir concentrates on singing the writings of the founder of the Baha'i faith, Baha'u'llah, which have been set to music in a number of different traditions. Their conductor, Cosma Gottardi, is studying chemistry at Imperial College, London and is passionate about music, crossing the boundary between science and art. See http://londonchoir.cgottardi.com
Outstanding choreographer and teacher, Champa Shah, who works in both Crawley and Brighton, will bring a group of dancers. They will perform dances from two of the classical Hindu traditions and demonstrate how dance has over the centuries bridged the differences between faiths and cultures.
Well known and very experienced Horsham based presenter and musician, Chris Banks, will MC the event. His credits include Horsham Festival, Barns Green Music Festival, Horsham Hospital Fun Day, and many other local Charity events. Generations in Horsham will remember him as the one and only 'Chris-Spin-a-Disc', entertaining adults and children since the 1970s.
Horsham Interfaith Forum was founded in 2004 and aims to promote understanding and co-operation between people of different faith traditions. Active members come from Muslim, Christian, Baha'i, Unitarian, Quaker, Hindu, Buddhist and Jewish faiths as well as those not belonging to a specific faith tradition.
