Don't Cut Us Out protest at County Hall in March last year

The Don’t Cut Us Out campaign group against West Sussex County Council’s cuts to care for people with moderate needs have collected 5,000 signatures in a petition meaning the council now has to discuss the issue.

WSCC decided to fund social care only to elderly and disabled people with substantial and critical care needs from April 2009 because of severe financial constraints.

The success of the campaign group, led by professional social workers, carers and those within the medical profession, has triggered a debate at full council on October 19 at 10.30am at County Hall, Chichester.

This week the council also announced the Adult Social Care Select Committee will be discussing the issue at its meeting on October 3.

Committee chairman Margaret Whitehead said: “Many concerns were raised when changes to the eligibility threshold for adult social care were introduced by WSCC, so it is important for the committee to take stock and understand how people have been affected. Local Involvement Network (LINk) is the consumer voice for health and social care, and its report should help us to monitor the full impact of these changes, and to identify any issues or concerns that need to be addressed. LINk has made a number of recommendations, particularly with regard to simple, low cost and practical services and ensuring that universally available wellbeing services reach people with moderate care needs.”

The committee will consider whether or not it supports the recommendations.
