Call for permanent memorial

FRIENDS of Ricky Butler have called for a permanent memorial to the 15-year-old who died tragically at a Hallowe'en Party in Horsham – and the County Times wants to hear YOUR ideas.

The Horsham community was hit hard by the news that the fun-loving Forest School student, from Leith View Road, had died after an incident in Gorringes Brook on Saturday November 3.

Record numbers of tributes flooded in to the County Times office and on to our website www.wscountytimes.co.uk last week.

This week we have asked Ricky's family, friends, neighbours and school mates to tell us how they would like to remember the cheeky chap, who brought a smile to so many people's faces.

This permanent memorial could take any form: some possible ideas might include a local public graffiti wall in Ricky's memory, a dedicated skate ramp in Horsham Park, a public area of remembrance, a trust fund in his name.

Camilla Janman wrote: "I think it would be an excellent and touching idea to have a memorial for Ricky.

"Something local is a lovely idea.

"Perhaps a graffiti wall in the playing field at Roffey where he often hung out.

"If you divided the wall into lots of sections and let each friend do their own tribute to Ricky.

"But only if his family wanted to because it may be too much for them and obviously their feelings come first. The skate park idea is also a good one too.

"I work in Collyer's (sixth form college) canteen and I would be happy to be responsible for a collection bucket there.

"Even though Ricky didn't go there I think the students are always happy to help."

Diane Boniface wrote: "I think the graffiti wall or the skate ramp because I know Ricky liked his graffiti art a lot and he liked his skating a bit as well.

"It means a lot to me to be a part of it."
