Bulky item mobile recycling points to be trialled in South Downs villages
Broken or unwanted electrical items – from fridges and freezers to fluorescent tubes and hairdryers – are to be collected during a trial mobile recycling event in the Chanctonbury area from the end of this month (September).
Mobile Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) events will be trialled in the four parishes of Henfield, Pulborough, Steyning and Storrington on a rolling basis until April 2013.
The first of the eight events will be held in Henfield High Street Car Park on Sunday, 23 September between 10am and 3pm.
The scheme is being run by West Sussex County Council in partnership with Viridor and support from Horsham District Council in order to further encourage recycling of small WEEE items and to provide a more localised service in rural communities.
Funding for the pilot has come from the manufacturers and retailers of electrical and electronic waste, who are legally required to fund the recycling of WEEE at their end of life.
The trial follows a successful series of WEEE collection events that were trialled at the county’s busiest mobile recycling service in Selsey.
This provided the service model for the latest series of WEEE collection events, which will be reviewed in February next year.
County Council Deputy Leader Lionel Barnard, Cabinet Member responsible for waste, said: “West Sussex is a UK pacesetter when it comes to recycling WEEE items.
“Our experience in Selsey has demonstrated that this service works and is valued and we are confident that people will want to take advantage of the service in the Chanctonbury area.”
The WEEE service will be able to accept large electrical appliances such as washing machines and cookers; fridges and freezers; display equipment such as TVs; laptops and personal computers; fluorescent tubes; small electrical appliances such as hairdryers and batteries.
For any items that can’t be accepted, the nearest household waste recycling sites are at Hopoast, Worthing Road, Horsham RH13 0AR or at Brighton Road, Shoreham BN43 6RJ.
Alternatively you can contact Horsham District Council, which offers a chargeable bulky household collection service. For more details visit the website or telephone 01403 733144.
