Budding Southwater gardeners
Holy Innocents Playgroup in Southwater have some ‘budding’ gardeners this year.
Back in April, each child attending the setting based at the Church Rooms, Church Lane in Southwater, planted a Sunflower seed in a pot. They later took home the seedlings and nurtured them with their green fingers crossed, they watered them and waited to see them grow!
This year it was decided that rather than the tallest sunflower winning the prize, we bought special seeds which should produce multi-headed sunflowers. The winner would be judged by how many blooms it had.
Due to the very wet summer many did not even flower; however, after careful attention throughout the summer at the children’s homes, playgroup owner Cathy Walden announced the results.
The winners were:
1st Oliver Mullahy aged 4 with 8 blooms
2nd Shelby Chalkly aged 3 with 4 blooms
3rd Jake Barrett-Dewdney aged 3 with 2 blooms
Pictured here, Oli Mullahy with an eight headed specimen; certificates and presentation flowers, from left to right, Shelby, Oli, Jake.
The children were given cash prizes to spend as they wished.
