BNP third in by-election

THE British National Party (BNP) party finished third in yesterday's Horsham District Council by-election, beating the Labour, UKIP and Independence candidates.

Sheila Dale, from the Liberal Democrats, enabled her party to retain the seat with the Tories in second spot, nearly 100 votes behind.

The turnout was nearly 32 per cent.

The political balance at Horsham District Council remains as follows: 23 Conservative, 19 Liberal Democrat and two Independent district councillors (44 in total).

The candidates received the following number of votes:

Sheila Denise Dale (Liberal Democrat) - 550

Jacqueline Margaret Cox (Conservative) – 456

Richard James Trower (British National Party) - 171

Antony Thomas Reid Fletcher (Independent) – 78

John David Thomas (Labour) – 54

Stuart Aldridge (UK Independence Party) – 40
