Bid to send football boots to African kids

A funeral director’s in Horsham has joined an appeal to collect 1,000 pairs of football boots for children in rural Africa.
C&T Radmall in Bishopric are one of more than 50 funeral directors across the UK supporting the The Education and Book Appeal: Ghana (Teabag) appeal whose volunteers help some of the world’s poorest children.
Carol Dabbs, who works at C&T Radmall, has decorated the shop window with African items donated by Horsham Museum to encourage people to bring their children’s outgrown football boots.
Teabag chairman Roger Gillman visits the charity’s schools in Ghanaian villages about four times a year.
He said: “They were absolutely delighted when we took some out. The boys are football mad. When there’s a big game on, people stand in the street to watch it. If you ask them who they support it’s always Man Utd, but they would never be able to get a pair of football boots.
“What we had to do is find each child and fit them to the shoe.”
He said although the children don’t have much, they are grateful for small mercies.
“Life isn’t too bad in the cities, but in the rural areas it’s pretty hopeless. They are fisherman or farmers and there’s never any surplus.
“The children aren’t starving, but they are malnourished. The children there are happier then the children in England who want the next thing.”
Anyone who has any boots or trainers to donate can take them to C & T Radmall, 3-4 Shelley House, Bishopric, Horsham or call 01403 257444 to arrange collection.
People can also sponsor a child for £15 a year, which pays for all their school books, uniform and education for the year.
