Ravenscroft ball court in Storrington

A community group has launched a bid to save and renovate a Storrington ball court as it faces the prospect of demolition and relocation.

Late in September Storrington Parish Council decided to dismantle Ravenscourt ball court and return the land to allotment use after repeated vandalism of the site.

However Friends of Meadowside, who hope to work constructively with the parish council, want to raise funds for an updated ball court, purpose built to encourage use throughout Storrington.

Sue Shelton, chairman of the group, said: “While we welcome the intention of the Parish Council to install skate park facilities in the village, we believe this should not be at the expense of the ball court.

“The ball court itself is important to the children in the community, and rather than being demolished could well be used more widely and to better effect.”

Storrington Parish Council said it had been approached about the possibility of an alternative to moving the ball court and this will be investigated and discussed further over the coming months.

A spokesperson for the parish council said: “There are a number of obstacles to overcome before consideration can be given to repairing the facility in its current location including the fact that the land is leased to the parish council with just a 12 month notice period, which could adversely affect any funding opportunities.”
