Battle of the talents at Summer show

Gifted gardeners had tough competition from cooks during the Southwater Horticultural Society (SHS) Summer Show at the weekend.
Whilst vegetable farmers have struggled against dismal weather this summer, the cookery judge remarked on the excellence of cheese straws and jams during the culinary competitions of the horticultural show on Saturday (September 1).
Southwater’s high standards were maintained over all the classes and a good number of visitors and winners were welcomed at the Southwater village hall, Church Lane.
The Over 60’s Cup, the 21 Cup for the most outstanding exhibit in the show and the Agate Cup for the most outstanding exhibit in floral art, went to Anne Pyle.
Jennie Ansell won the Ansell Cup for second highest points in the adult sections and the Willcock’s Cup for most points in cookery.
Robert Piper won five awards including; the Chairman’s Cup for most points in the adult sections; the Whitbread Cup for most points in vegetables; the NFVPA Award; the Banksian Medal; and the Vegetable Society Medal .
Linda Briggs received three awards; the Chessall Cup for most points in flowers; the Broad Cup for best five onions under 250 gm; and Gladys Wall Memorial Bowl for most points in garden flowers.
Decorative Cup for most points in floral art went to Anne Tuckwell and the Potter Cup for most points in preserves was awarded to Audrey Broad
Jasmine Rigby won the Lindfield Cup for junior resident in Southwater and the Juniors Cup for floral art.
Best Exhibit Trophy Junior Children went to Emily Dan.
50 Senior Children and Best Exhibit Trophy senior Children were awarded to Annie Summerfield.
The Special Class Cup - Fuchsia went to Jeremy Senneck
The gardening club usually meets on the third Wednesday evening of each month.
