Businesses in Horsham town centre were given a massive boost over the weekend of 1 and 2 September as a record number of people took part in a real ale trail; part of the ‘Big Nibble’ weekend of celebrations.
Ten of the town’s eclectic watering holes opened their doors to a staggering one hundred and seventy five people who signed up for the ‘Horsham Beer Trail’, organised by Horsham District Council and kindly sponsored by Piries Bar of Piries Place.
Pubs and bars used the annual event as a profile raiser, inviting customers in with their mini tasting tankard and accompanying programme they’d paid just £1 for, to sample some of their finest real ales. Some pubs put on a choice of up to three tasters; anything from Arundel Castle to Conqueror Stout, or Saxon to Dark Star Hophead.
Those who sampled beer in each of the participating venues and submitted their signed or stamped programme by the end of the day were entered into a free prize draw, sponsored by The Black Jug on North Street.
Horsham resident Dave Goddard was drawn as the lucky winner of a three course meal for two and said: “I had a great time taking part in the beer tail on Saturday; it’s a really good opportunity to sample lots of different types of beers and to go into a couple of the pubs I wouldn’t usually visit. “Entering a prize draw was a complete bonus and I was shocked to hear I’d won, especially as so many people took part.
“The beer trail is a great idea for businesses too to raise their profile and attract new customers. “Thanks to the Black Jug for such a great prize; I’m looking forward to enjoying the meal for two there very soon.” The Black Jug Manager, Ally Craig said: “The Black Jug has been involved in the Horsham Beer Trail in some form since it first started.
“It’s fun and you get to see some great Horsham pubs serving some great real ale.
“We really enjoy meeting some interesting folk as well as giving something back to the community.”
