A27 Arundel by-pass benefits explored

Horsham District Council, in partnership with Arun District Council and West Sussex County Council has commissioned Parsons Brinckerhoff to undertake a study of the wider economic impacts of an A27 Arundel bypass.

Identifying benefits which the scheme will bring to the local economy will help develop a robust business case and increase the likelihood of securing funding for the project.

Stage 1 of the project involves surveying businesses which currently use the A27 at Arundel to understand the impact of the scheme on them, as well as considering environmental benefits at Storrington. Stage 2 will then calculate the wider economic benefits of the bypass including economic growth, job creation and impacts on land values.

A survey has been launched to gather information and views from companies in the region to establish their current operations and the extent these may change in the future if the A27 Arundel bypass were built. Businesses which are located near Arundel, or rely on the A27 through Arundel to connect them to suppliers and customers are being asked to give their views. This will help to provide the information needed to understand how the A27 at Arundel supports businesses today and how its future will influence economic growth and choices about future investment.

For the purposes of the survey, respondents are asked to consider the benefits of having an A27 Arundel bypass - a two way dual carriageway, from west of Arundel, to the South and rejoining the A27 East of Arundel at the junction with the A284 at Crossbush. There are not any more specific proposals at this stage.

Pieter Montyn, West Sussex Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “This is an important survey and shows that, working with our partners, we are maintaining the pressure for a badly needed Arundel by-pass. I hope that the business community and their customers will take the time to respond, so that we can develop a compelling economic case for the scheme. At the same time, I want to reassure people that we are also lobbying hard for improvements to the A27 at Chichester and between Worthing and Lancing.”

Councillor Gillian Brown, Leader of Arun District Council, said: “It has been on the wish list for a long time to find a solution to the issues of the A27 in Arundel. We believe the road congestion has a huge economic impact including reducing the opportunities to create more jobs in the area.”

Cllr Ray Dawe, Leader of Horsham District Council, said: “Horsham District Council is pleased to be working with our partners to gather information to enable us to lobby for the Arundel by-pass.

“Although it will probably only affect businesses in the southern portion of the Horsham District there are other environmental concerns including air quality problems in Storrington that will be addressed by the by-pass. For this reason we are keen for the district’s business community to respond. Road congestion in the rural villages in the Horsham District is a key concern for this Council.”
