Local heroes wanted in West Sussex

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is on the look out for new retained firefighters for a number of its county fire stations including Henfield, Billinshurst and Storrington.

Retained firefighters are men and women from all walks of life who combine their day jobs and duties with being “on call” as a firefighter, ready to respond to emergencies when their alerter goes off. Retained firefighters are the backbone of the Fire and Rescue Service and fully crew 14 of the 25 of the county’s fire stations.

Retained firefighters respond to a whole range of emergencies including fires, floods, road traffic collisions and animal rescues.

Rob Baker-Johnson, Retained Liaison Officer for Crawley and Mid Sussex, said: “Retained firefighters are ordinary men and women who do an extraordinary job for the Fire & Rescue Service and are integral to keeping their local fire station crewed.

“We are now looking for new retained firefighters to join our retained teams at fire stations across West Sussex. We welcome applications from all sections of the community. You just need to live or work within 4 minutes of the fire station, be over 18 and have a good level of physical fitness.
