The Horsham Lions have decided to make their swimarathon an annual fixture owing to the success of February’s event.
The charity is taking entries for the next event in March next year after more than £3,700 was raised for the provision of four defibrillators for the three senior schools in Horsham and the QEII School for pupils with profound learning difficulties.
The second Swimarathon will be held at The Pavilions in the Park on March 3 2013 and half the money raised through sponsorship will be donated to a Lions District project to raise £250,000 to purchase night vision equipment for a new air ambulance helicopter to service the Horsham area. The money will help buy spotlights for the helicopter, pilot training and licensing and flooding lighting at hospital landing sites.
The other half will go to a good cause of the swimmers’ choice. Sponsorship is based on the total number of lengths swum by the whole team.
There is no entry fee, all ages can take part from eight to 70 inclusive. A team of six swimmers plus an adult non-swimming captain is required. Entries must be made by completing the official entry form by Monday February 11 2013. Entries will be limited to a maximum of 32 teams.
The Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance currently respond to 1,500 daylight calls every year. There are a further one or two each night that they cannot respond to with the helicopter although they do respond to some by sending the duty doctor and paramedic by road.
