New approach to difficulties

It is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Awareness Week from October 14-20 (see http://www.adhdawarenessweek.org/ ), and the Learning Assessment and Neurocare Centre (LANC) (www.lanc.uk.com) is a local multidisciplinary lifespan clinic specialising in the assessment and management of individuals with complex neurodevelopmental conditions particularly ADHD and autistic spectrum difficulties in addition to people with specific learning difficulties, Tourette’s syndrome, and other complex difficulties.

As part of raising awareness of ADHD, the team at LANC would like to inform people of a new approach that it includes as part of the holistic assessment process it undertakes.

This approach is called a Quantitative Electroencephalogram (QEEG) which measures brain activity, allowing the identification of the profile of brain activity in an individual.

It is well reported that the brain activity profiles of people with symptoms of ADHD, and associated disorders, differ to those of people who do not experience the symptoms, and as such it is possible to provide a physiological explanation for their behaviour and cognitive difficulties.

When the brain activity profile is considered along with the usual clinical presentation, cognitive tests, and questionnaire reports, the consultant paediatrician can be more confident in making an accurate diagnosis where appropriate.

A further development in the ADHD field is the ongoing lobbying by Dr Geoff Kewley, consultant paediatrician at LANC, along with other professionals, as part of the Better Futures Group.

One call to action from this group is to highlight the time when a child is excluded from school as an ideal moment to screen for potential ADHD.

Finally, Caroline Williams, an ADHD coach in the local area, has recently established a website (see http://adhdconnect.browsedigital.net/ ) which aims to provide a resource centre in relation to ADHD, and facilitate the setting up of support groups.
