LETTER: Leave roads for the motorists

The British Horse Society (B.H.S.) is conducting a campaign to '˜educate' motorists in the etiquette of interaction between horses and automobiles. Their assumption is that it is only drivers who need this information.

Perhaps this society is not aware of the vastly increased numbers of cars on the roads. Perhaps they are not aware of the obstruction, both in front of them and behind, caused by horse riders walking slowly along, more often than not in two abreast formation.

Perhaps they are not aware of the delays and frustrations to other road users caused by their sometimes thoughtless behaviour. Perhaps they are not aware that a radiant smile and a cheery wave, as one inches past, simply is not good enough.

Perhaps the best advice the B.H.S. could offer to their members is simply to stay off the roads. They would no doubt argue that they have as much right to be on the highways and byways as anybody else. I agree. But it is car drivers who pay their taxes in order for the highways and byways to be maintained up to a suitable standard for one and all to use. If motorists did not foot this bill, then the roads would not be in a fit state for anybody to use, and the horsey contingent would then have to revert to those facilities which have always been there for them: the fields, meadows and bridleways that have existed for time immemorial (i.e. before the age of the motor car).

Perhaps they would be best advised to use them anyway, and not to try to assert their presence on the over busy roads.

Tally ho
