LETTER: Good riddance to ugly feature

I agree entirely with the various correspondents who want Horsham to preserve its artistic and architectural heritage. That is with one exception; the Rising Universe.

It dominates the otherwise quiet water features of that part of West Street/Bishopric. It is ugly, inelegant and is almost obscene, looking like some sort of rotting cabbage.

The feature was originally intended for the university town of Cambridge, but they sensibly refused to have it and no one is quite sure who authorised it to be placed in such a prominent part of Horsham. It originally cost £179,960 of which Sainsbury gave a donation of £119,000.

Throughout its life it seldom worked properly and neither did the satellite arms. Up until about 2014 it cost Horsham residents around £176,000 to repair, although there have been other substantial costs since then and it will cost about £50,000 to remove.

It is going at last and not before time, at a total cost to HDC of well over a quarter of a million pounds.

Frankly good riddance and let’s build on the pleasant water features that already exist in that area.
