LETTER: Meeting our future needs

It was interesting to see your report on the planning application DC/16/1371 for a new multiplex cinema, whilst at the same time to see some of the negative comments that have been made concerning the application.

Whether we like it or not, we have an ever increasing population in and around Horsham and one presumes that we have to expect that the number of people wishing to access Horsham, when the West of Horsham, North of Horsham, Southwater and Billingshurst developments to name but a few, will increase dramatically.

Most towns have to be prepared to change in a controlled way to meet future needs and there’s no doubt that there is or will be a need for a multiplex cinema in Horsham.

Why should the people, who live in and around Horsham, be forced to go to Crawley by car?

Perhaps many people, who live or will live in or around the town, might decide to walk to a multiplex cinema in Horsham rather than drive to one in Crawley.

We shouldn’t resist change of this type just because older people like me might not use the facility.

Are there any dangers associated with the proposal? Of course there are. Parking has been raised as an issue but it’s somewhat of a red herring.

The large increase in housing numbers in our immediate vicinity that’s going to happen over the next few years will create potential parking problems that will have to be resolved.

In many ways, parking associated with a multiplex cinema will be the least of our worries.

What happens to the Capitol if it loses the income from its cinemas, you might well ask? This is a very important question, which the council will need to resolve.

It’s likely that additional sources of revenue will need to be found to keep it open as a theatre. Many other towns have the same problem but if the theatre is seen as an essential part of what the town has to offer, as it must be in a town of the size Horsham currently is and will become, the necessary revenue and / or funding must be found.

The most important issue that needs to be resolved

is the appearance of the external façade of the new building. It has to be compatible with what’s already within the area and this is where attention should be focused. It’s no use talking about what else might happen in this area at some unspecified time in the future. Let’s move forward and give many people what I think they would like to have as a facility. Let’s keep as much of our residents’ footfall within Horsham and not force them to take their business to Crawley.
