LETTER: A time of waiting

August is always a time of waiting.

For parents it is a time of waiting for the new school year to begin, for sixth formers it is waiting for AS and A-level results and waiting to know if they have got into their first choice further education, for farmers it is waiting to bring in the last of the season’s crop. For me, this year, it is waiting to meet my first grand-child.

What are you waiting for? How are you waiting? Are you waiting with some trepidation or even fear as to what the future might be?

Are you waiting with bated breath for that explosion of joy that your expectation engenders?

Or are you waiting for that moment of final parting that involves loss, separation and grief.

Whatever your experience of waiting, when the wait is over, what follows is never what we expected. God waits.

He waits like a father waits for a wayward son’s return; He waits for our self-awareness as He draws in the sand and listens to an angry judgemental mob; He waits for us until He finds us waiting for Him and then He lifts us up on wings like an eagle’s and He is never what we expected.

Minister of Trafalgar Road Baptist Church,
