Today is International Left-Handers Day and leisure centres across the Horsham district are inviting people to test how strong their left vs right hands with gym challenges.
Back in 1992, August 13 became International Left-Handers Day, an annual event when left-handers everywhere can celebrate their sinistrality and increase public awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of being left-handed.
The Left Handers Club says this event is now celebrated worldwide, and in the UK alone there have been more than 20 regional events to mark the day in recent years – including left-v-right sports matches, a left-handed tea party, pubs using left-handed corkscrews where patrons drank and played pub games with the left hand only, and nationwide “Lefty Zones” where left-handers creativity, adaptability and sporting prowess were celebrated, while right-handers were encouraged to try out everyday left-handed objects to see just how awkward it can feel using the wrong equipment.
Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre, Pavilions in the Park in Horsham, Steyning Leisure Centre and Billingshurst Leisure Centre have all Tweeted the challenge for people to test their left hand.
The Left-Handers Club was formed in 1990 aiming to keep members in touch with developments, make their views known to manufacturers and others, provide a help & advice line, to promote research into left-handedness and development of new left-handed items.
Famous people who are left-handed include: Tom Cruise, Whoopi Goldberg, Paul McCartney, Oprah Winfrey, Justin Bieber, Celine Dion, Jennifer Lawrence, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie
In the past, left-handedness was seen as a mark of the devil, a sign of neurosis, rebellion, and criminal activities. In fact, the word ‘left’ in English comes from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘lyft’, meaning broken or weak.
The Latin for left is sinister.
In historical texts regarding witchcraft in Europe, the left hand was the one used to cast spells and inflict harm on others. Witches could supposedly simply touch someone with their left hand to curse them.
In a university test, results concluded that there were more left handed people with IQs over 140 than those individuals with dominant right hands. To prove it, Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin, Benjamin Franklin, and Isaac Newton were left-handed
