Landfill campaign: 'carry on the fight'

A CAMPAIGN group is urging residents to continue the fight against plans for a landfill site at Laybrook, Thakeham.

Despite the application being withdrawn, Cory Environmental has said it will be submitting a new application as soon as possible.

West Sussex County Council has said members of the public who have already made comments will be written to asking if they still wish to submit them.

However, Thakeham Village Action (TVA) says that all objections should be automatically carried across to any new application and the public should then be asked whether they want to add or change their response.

Jean Locker, TVA's spokesperson, added: "Only this way can the democratic process of everyone's voice being heard be guaranteed."

The campaign group is also asking for a full eight week consultation to consider the new application.

Mrs Locker said: "This new information must be substantial and the new application significantly different from the old one; otherwise the county council would simply let Cory reapply now.

"We imagine it could include radical changes such as a different lorry route to the site via the A272 and the B2139. To be fair and safe, the community must have eight weeks to respond and the county council should make this decision now so that everything is transparent."

It is still not clear when the new application will be submitted but Cory says it will be working with the council to look at comments from the public. WSCC has still not confirmed the length of the consultation.

Mrs Locker added: ""We do not expect this application to go away.

"We will continue to campaign against a landfill dump at Laybrook. We realise it could take several months before the new application is validated.

"Campaigners always knew this would be a long campaign, but we believe that time is on our side.

"In this period before the new application is validated, we ask that everyone tells their county councillors that landfilling rotting rubbish is history, there are plenty of alternative methods of dealing with waste and capturing the valuable resources it contains and they, the council, should get a move on to make the change happen."
