Horsham DKW Karate Club have done maintenance work on a defibrillator the club gave to Kingslea School Defibrillator.

In 2012, Horsham DKW Karate Club proudly presented a defibrillator to Kingslea school in appreciation of the use of the school facilities where we have trained for many years.

The units are very sophisticated and regularly monitor themselves and periodically give a green flash to indicate all is well. If activated the unit will “talk” the first aider step by step through the application of the pads and use of the defibrillator so no training is required and no harm can be caused to the patient. The only maintenance required is replacement every four years of the pad/battery cartridge as the gel on the pads may slowly deteriorate and batteries may loose there charge after this extended time.

Fortunately the defibrillator has not been required although a couple of times it looked as if it might be needed. As four years has now flown by the club decided to offer to provide the replacement cartridges and the picture shows the Headteacher Mr Conway receiving the new cartridge which has now been fitted.

As club members have fortunately never had to use a defibrillator the opportunity was taken to use the old cartridge to demonstrate the ease with which the pads are accessed and the display on the pads to show their correct placement. It was also noticed that even though replacement is recommended after four years the pads and battery were in excellent condition and would have worked perfectly.
