A HORSHAM girl is celebrating after taking top honours in an Italian-themed mask making competition.

Ten year old Rachel Cheesman’s winning entry was a metallic silver mask decorated with purple and orange stars, ribbons and glass gem stones.

The contest was part of the Southern Water supported Carnevale di Venezia (Venetian Festival) which was held on Easter Monday during the annual Piazza Italia celebration in the Carfax, Horsham.

Rachel was presented with her prize, a pair of tickets to an event of her choice at the Capitol Theatre, by general manager Michael Gattrell.

She said: “I did a lot of research on the internet and looked at different designs before I started making my own mask. A lot of them used contrasting colours and that helped me decide what my mask would look like. I was really happy when I found out that my entry had won first prize.”

Joanne Fielding-Cooke, project manager for Southern Water’s metering programme, added: “The mask making competition really seemed to capture people’s imagination, with lots of youngsters turning up at the mask making workshops held in Horsham in the run up to the Easter weekend.

“The mask Rachel made is really eye-catching and I hope she thoroughly enjoys her night out at the Capitol Theatre.

“Our support for the Carnevale di Venezia is all part of our efforts to work together with the communities where we are currently installing water meters.”

Water resources in the South East are under pressure and the region has been classified as one of serious water stress by the Government.

Nigel Fitzsimmons, from Horsham District Council, assisted with the organisation of Horsham Piazza Italia and the Carnevale di Venezia.

He said: “We were all really impressed by Rachel’s mask and it was obvious she had put a lot of effort into making it.

“The 2011 Piazza Italia celebrations were a real success and we are already looking forward to and planning next year’s event.”
