A team of fundraisers from Coolham will be running on porridge oats when they do a 24-hour Cancer Research UK Relay for Life this weekend (July 14 and 15).

The ladies, who will all be taking turns at walking laps around a track at Grattons Park in Crawley, have been given 300 Oatburst ready to mix porridge pots by food producers, Symingtons, to fuel them and to sell to other walkers.

Fund-raising mum of two, Shirley Kirby, said “We were stuck for a fundraising idea when I remembered that last year a snack of porridge had really helped to warm me up and keep me going during the long hours of the relay.

“We spoke to Symingtons and they were fantastic and so generous, donating 300 pots of Oatburst read-mix porridge pots for us to sell to other fundraisers this year.”

The group - called the `Vino Keenos’ - formed to raise funds for Cancer Research UK after two friends underwent treatment for cancer and since they were formed they have raised around £15,000.

Vino Keeno Team Captain Tracy White said: “Most of us have been touched at some time by the illness or loss of a close family member or friend from cancer and we formed to try to do something positive towards finding a cure.”

Shirley said: “We will be selling the porridge for £1 a pot. We will also be running a hogroast, a barrow of goodies raffle and princess and pirate make-overs and expect to raise around £2,000 during the event.”
