FIREFIGHTERS who helped with the rescue operation in Japan are supporting a town centre event to raise money for earthquake survivors.

Noriko Hughes, from Horsham, but originally from Japan, is organising a Japan fun day for all ages in the Carfax and last week Sussex firefighters confirmed they will be there.

From 10am to 5pm on Saturday April 9 there will be workshops running including origami, Japanese children’s games, a shiatsu demonstration and sushi.

The firefighters went out to Japan after the earthquake and tsunami struck last month. They described the scenes as “eerie”.

Shortly after arriving back in the UK, Joe Secco, a firefighter from Worthing told The County Times: “It was just devastation everywhere, there were bits of houses missing and piles of wood.”

Noriko and her friends are hoping to raise vital funds to help people who have survived the earthquake.

To join them go to the bandstand in Carfax, Horsham, on Saturday.
