Southwater Village Hall which dates back to 1924 and was used by London evacuees during WWII has recently been presented with a £2,000 donation from local housebuilder Barratt Homes.

The money is set to continue to help towards ongoing upgrades of this busy community owned and run facility located off Church Lane, just over a mile from Barratt’s brand new development Martindale Place.

Robert Piper, chairman of the Southwater Village Hall management committee commented: “Southwater Village Hall has been providing its local community with a base for educational, leisure and recreational activities for almost 90 years.

“It’s an extremely busy place which is used by more than 20 different groups with ages ranging from five years old to 95 years old, so this donation means a great deal to everyone linked with the hall.

“The money that Barratt has donated will go a long way to help us continue upgrading and maintaining the building and grounds.”

Southwater Village Hall is a registered charity run by volunteers committed to providing its local community with good quality facilities for a variety of community groups from Southwater and the surrounding area.

Current groups which regularly use the facility include a pre-school group, Brownies & Girl Guides, three different dancing groups and even an amateur dramatics group. Built in 1924 was used an educational base for child evacuees from Southwark in London during WWII.

Lynnette St Quintin, Sales Director at Barratt Southern Counties commented: “This building has been an important part of the local community for the best part of a century.

“It has a really interesting history and is run by a highly dedicated team of volunteers who are continuing the legacy of this historic community building.

“We’re thrilled that our donation will help with their improvements and hopefully our new residents at Martindale Place will get involved with many different activities taking place there,” she continued.
