DeFreitas to lead legends team as Wisborough mark 275 years

Phil DeFreitas will lead a Sporting Legends XI team made up of former England international cricketers and footballers for a charity event at Wisborough Green.

To mark 275 years of cricket being played on the green, England legend DeFreitas’ team will take on a Wisborough Green All Stars side on Thursday, August 25.

The legends XI is expected to boast Dean Headley, Corey Collymore and Warren Hegg along with former footballers Paul Walsh and Luther Blissett - while Roger Dakin will provide lunchtime entertainment.

The day will raise money for Chestnut Tree House, the cricket nets and the junior cricket development fund.

Chairman Steve Calder-Smith said: “The legends day will be a fantastic opportunity to show how Wisborough Green is developing as a cricket club. It is hard to imagine that cricket has been played in our idyllic village for at least 275 years and we should celebrate our longevity.

“Over the last few years we have built a strong junior infrastructure with over 150 colts supported by 14 qualified coaches. A village club like ours is only as good as its roots and its community citizenship. The money raised will not only support a good cause but also help us to build even more infrastructure in terms of facilities and coaches for all to benefit from.

“We are looking forward to an excellent day and we have a few surprises up our sleeve which will make the day memorable for cricketers and non-cricketers alike.”

Junior cricket will take place on the day from 9.30am with a three-course meal, entertainment and auction in the marquee from midday.

The match will start at 3pm with post-match band and at the Cricketers Arms following afterwards. Tables are available for lunch at an early bird price - until July 8 - of £500 for ten or at £50 per person. To book, email [email protected]
