Coventry City’s joint-caretaker manager Dave Hockaday has been made favourite to become Crawley Town’s manager.

Dean Saunders turned down the Reds’ offer and was today unveiled as the new manager of League 1 club Chesterfield.

The Spireates’ manager Paul Cook departed the club yesterday to become Portsmouth boss.

Former Portsmouth boss Andy Awford and ex Port Vale and Brighton boss Micky Adams have been mentioned for the job but so far no odds have been offered by bookmakers.

Other candidates mentioned for the role include Leeds United head coach Neil Redfearn at 10/1, ex Barnsley and Sheffield United manager Danny Wilson 12/1, England legend and ex-Notts Forest boss Stuart Pearce 16/1, Phil Neville 16/1, Fleetwood manager Graham Alexander 16/1 and former Crawley caretaker manager Craig Brewster who is now Brighton’s youth coach at 16/1.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes is an outsider to take the Crawley role, at 33/1.
