THIS is the face of the man accused of killing his wife at their West Chiltington home.

William Allen, 66, of Nyetimber Copse, appeared today at Crawley Magistrates’ Court. He spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.

He was led up to the dock with his head bowed, wearing a brown striped polo-neck.

He is alleged to have killed Linda Allen, 64, after becoming obsessed that a major renovation project on their home was failing. Her body was found at a house in the village on Thursday last week.

Mr Allen is accused of stabbing Mrs Allen and striking her to the head with a hammer as she slept in bed, before attempting to kill himself by cutting an artery in his leg.

He was remanded in custody and was due to appear before Lewes Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on Wednesday June 15.
