Horsham Neighbourhood Policing Team has issued the warning after reports of these purses being taken from women’s handbags in Swan Walk shopping centre on Tuesday (December 16).

Victims told officers that even though they had placed purses in zipped bags, thieves had somehow still managed to take them.

Sergeant Chris O’Leary, of Horsham Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Officers have been handing out scores of free bells which clip to bags or purses and sound a warning if they are tampered with. These are also available on request from the police station in Hurst Road.

“And with the town busy with Christmas shoppers, we are also stepping up patrols to deter thieves and pickpockets. We would always advise people to ensure their valuables are kept as secure as possible, to be aware of who’s around them and not to be distracted.”

Anyone seeing a suspected theft should phone police immediately on 999.
