A spokesperson said: “It’s not illegal to sell at the door and legitimate callers won’t mind if you shut and lock the door while you verify their identity. Always call the number in the phonebook not the one on their ID card.”

If you suspect a rogue trader is at your door, call 999. Do not open the door if you are suspicious, police said.

You can contact Trading Standards by calling the Citizens Advice Consumer Service number on 03454 04 05 06, and collect a window sticker warning off uninvited traders from your nearest police station.
