Police officers are warning people in Horsham about potential scams following reports of possible rogue traders calling at properties in the district.
The force are raising awareness of ‘doorstep crime’, having recently held a week of action along with Trading Standards targeting rogue traders.
Police have reminded the public that most reputable traders will have good references, and it could be concerning if they cannot supply a positive recommendation.
A spokesperson said: “It’s not illegal to sell at the door and legitimate callers won’t mind if you shut and lock the door while you verify their identity. Always call the number in the phonebook not the one on their ID card.”
If you suspect a rogue trader is at your door, call 999. Do not open the door if you are suspicious, police said.
You can contact Trading Standards by calling the Citizens Advice Consumer Service number on 03454 04 05 06, and collect a window sticker warning off uninvited traders from your nearest police station.
