Family devastated by death of '˜caring' young dad Sam

Sam Caulfield, 20, of Mayfield, suffered a fatal injury at a property in Spencers Road, West Green, on Saturday (June 18), said police.

A tribute from his family said: “Sam was a loving, loyal young man. He was passionate about fitness and health and loved his music and cooking.

“Sam was always smiling and looking out for people and he is going to be so deeply missed.

“We are devastated by our loss.”

He left behind his parents, 13-month-old daughter Millie-May, girlfriend Hayley Hillyer and many close family members and friends.

Sam volunteered for a charity that helps young men who have been in trouble with the law.

Nathan Roberts, CEO of abandofbrothers, said: “Sam was a much loved and respected part of abandofbrothers Crawley. His death has rocked our community to its core. Everyone he met was struck by his eloquence, his passion and his caring nature.

“He joined our community a few months ago and immediately became an active and valued member. He had already stepped up to volunteer on our residential trainings and was also active in a project to create a garden for a local young lad facing a degenerative illness.

“His passing leaves a big hole in our community and we will honour his memory by continuing to be there for any young man in Crawley who is seeking to be the best possible version of themselves.

“Our thoughts are with Sam’s family and friends and anyone who was lucky enough to have known him.”

A 24-year-old woman, a 22-year-old woman, and two 20-year-old men – who are all from Crawley – were arrested on suspicion of murder. They have been released on police bail pending further enquiries until August 9.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Officers were called by paramedics at around 3am. The victim was treated at the scene for what is believed to be a stab wound to the abdomen and was taken to hospital where he sadly died a short time later.”

Detective Chief Inspector Tanya Jones said: “This remains an ongoing investigation and has understandably come as a shock to the community.

“We continue to have a police presence in Spencers Road with officers available to speak with local residents about any concerns.

“We are still appealing for witnesses and would urge anyone who saw or heard anything in the early hours of Saturday morning, no matter how insignificant you may think it was, to get in touch.”
