West Sussex Trading Standards officers have seized counterfeit Olympic merchandise on sale in Horsham.

Officers came across the counterfeit phone covers being offered for sale in Horsham while investigating the supply of counterfeit Monopoly board games.

While counterfeit Olympic merchandise has been seized at the UK borders by HM Customs, this was the first time it has been found available at retail level within West Sussex.

West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Public Protection Christine Field said: “With the Olympic Torch Relay due to pass through West Sussex and the start of the London 2012 Games imminent, it was anticipated that some traders may try to illegally cash in on the Olympic brand, putting legitimate West Sussex business at economic risk.

“The supply of counterfeit goods has a detrimental effect on the legitimate local economy and is therefore actively targeted by Trading Standards officers.”

If anyone has suspicions that counterfeit goods are being supplied in West Sussex, they can contact Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 08454 040506 or completing an online form on the County Council’s website at www.westsussex.gov.uk
