SUSSEX Building Control has helped local developer Mark Avery achieve his plans to turn a traditional neglected barn near Billingshurst into a modern stylish home for his family.

As an experienced developer, Mark was aware that this project required both planning permission and Building Regulations Approval and was keen to engage the services of the Local Authority Building Control team at Horsham District Council - known as Sussex Building Control - at an early stage of the project.

The architect, Gerald Moore, submitted designs to Sussex Building Control so it could check that his plans for the barn complied with the Government’s Building Regulations. Gerald is partnered with Sussex Building Control, which means that he can check the plans for all his projects across England and Wales. The project has now been nominated for the regional building excellence awards.

Stephen Shorrocks, Building Control Manager at Sussex Building Control, said: “Mr Avery knew exactly what he wanted to achieve; he was keen to create a home that retained some of the original features but also wanted to use modern building techniques and materials.

“We worked with Mark and Gerald to ensure that the designs, materials and building methods complied with the regulations and gave them the desired outcome.

“Through the relationship that Sussex Building Control has with Gerald, we know and understand exactly how he works which speeds up the plan checking process and ensures that we are all working together to achieve high quality, compliant and, more importantly, safe and energy efficient homes for our local residents.”

Mr Avery added: “I am delighted with my new home.

“I chose to work with Sussex Building Control because they have local knowledge, are close to the site and can visit at short notice as they are always in the area, and are independent and very competitive.

“I didn’t have to rely on sending photos to them; they came to check every stage of the build to ensure it would be safe and efficient for my family to live in.

“I am also very pleased that Sussex Building Control has nominated the project for the regional building excellence awards.’’
