Tell us where the savings can be made
DO YOU work in the public sector? Do you use public services? If so, the Government wants your ideas!
Last week's Budget included a commitment that government departments overall will reduce their spending by 25 per cent over the next four years – only the NHS and the oversees aid budget are exempt. It won't be uniform; some might be more, some less.
Achieving this will not be easy – but it's crucial if Britain's finances are to be put back on track. Ministerial teams will be looking at where money can be saved in their departments but we want to hear from you – people that work in our public sector and people who are at the receiving end of public services.
We need your ideas as to how money can be saved – all ideas will be considered and many will end up in the final Spending Review which will set out detailed spending plans for all government departments and which will be published on October 20.
I visit places like schools, hospitals and doctors' surgeries on a regular basis.
I also speak to local people who, for example, use the welfare system or have experience of a case that has passed through the courts.
I've lost count of how many times employees and service users have commented on how public money is frittered away, is lost in the system or is simply misspent in the first place.
Some of it's mind-boggling. All of it is infuriating.
So the Government wants to hear your comments on where money is wasted and your ideas on where it can be saved. Each and every contribution will be considered by a group of experts at the heart of government.
The exercise is already open to public sector employees and on July 8 it will be opened up to everyone else. At the time of writing over 20,000 suggestions have been received.
Some are radical, aiming to change whole systems. Others are more low-key, making small savings that add up.
So, how do you get involved? It's easy – just go to spendingchallenge.hm-treasury.gov.uk and fill in the online form. You can take part anonymously or give as many details as you like.
Our Government is committed to turning our country's finances around.
Tough decisions need to be made but all attempts to cut the budget deficit will be done in a way that is true to our values of freedom, fairness and responsibility.
We're also all in this together and that's why we want public sector employees and services users to contribute to the formation of our Spending Review.
