Piazza Italia the place to be
THINKING of something to do this weekend? Wondering if you can please every member of your family? Calculating how much a day out is going to cost?!
Well, I'm pleased to say: look no further – your problems are solved as this weekend it's the 2009 Horsham Piazza Italia extravaganza!
Once again, Horsham District Council has organised two days of events – across Good Friday and Saturday 11 April – where there is literally something for everyone to enjoy and the best news of all is that the vast majority of it is completely free!
It's no exaggeration to say that there is simply too much going on for me to describe here and, frankly, a list would be rather boring but let me attempt to give you a flavour.
Across both days the town centre will boast an Italian market and also a local produce market and in various locations the very finest of the Italian motor industry will be on display, including Ducatis, Zondas, Maseratis, Lamborghinis, Ferraris and – most excitingly of all – a Ferrari Formula 1 car!
There'll also be a Scalextric Challenge in the town hall and special events at Horsham Museum and in Swan Walk, not to mention the street theatre, comedy and live music that's taking place throughout the town centre.
Something also tells me that a fair few among us will find the Hepworth & Co Festival Beer Station rather an enticing prospect! There is even a special Piazza Italia festival beer on offer.
On Friday (when parking in the town is free all day!), Horsham Churches Together have organised a Good Friday Gathering at the Carfax Bandstand at 11.10am which will include Public Processions of Witness. But it's not all about Horsham town centre. There's Billingshurst Ferrari Fever Friday when up to 30 of the cars pull up in the library car park between 11 and 11.30am. They will then carry on their journey to Horsham town centre.
The same will happen during Southwater Supercar Saturday, when up to 20 Italian Supercars converge on Lintot Square between 10.30 and 11.30am.
During both sessions visitors will be encouraged to donate whatever they can afford and however small to Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice – a wonderful charity that helps many local families.
This really is a unique event, bringing communities across the Horsham district together to have some fun and celebrate this Easter weekend in real Italian style!
