Lots going on in district

JUST last month, Horsham, Southwater and Billingshurst, played host to various parts of the hugely successful Horsham Piazza Italia.

Despite the predictably dodgy Easter weekend weather, lots of local residents – and many people from further afield – packed into Horsham to enjoy Italian markets, entertainment and beautiful classic and supercars.

Whilst families enjoyed the mostly free entertainment and took advantage of the delicious Italian food on offer, there was another serious reason for organising the weekend – to encourage visitors and local people to spend time (and money!) in Horsham town centre.

Just a glance at the Horsham District Council website makes you realise just how much there is going on in the district.

There are not many months when there is not something on offer, whether it's regular farmers markets, French Fest – a celebration of things French – this year's Food and Drink Festival and the increasingly popular Town Centre Festival, planned this year for the end of October/beginning of November.

This weekend does not fail to disappoint as Horsham town centre plays host to the second annual Horsham English Festival.

The festival – planned for tomorrow, Saturday – is based around the local Broadwood Morris Men's Day of Dance. There are displays of the traditional dances throughout the town centre.

As usual, public participation is very much encouraged – at 3pm the Carfax stages a traditional Scottish Ceilidh. OK, not very English, but we are still a United Kingdom!

There's also a medieval market featuring local brewers and cider makers, a hog roast and cockles and whelks.

Horsham Museum will be holding children's events – including two dragon workshops and there's also the chance to have a free ride on an historic open top bus. There's an open marble tournament, juggling displays and lots, lots more.

I feel proud to represent an area where community spirit is so abundant and so I'm hoping the weather will be kind to us, and that local people and visitors will have a huge amount of fun, Horsham traders will benefit and the British Red Cross – the festival's chosen charity – will raise much needed funds.

If readers would like more information, plenty can be found on Horsham District Council's website at www.horsham.gov.uk.
