Living the dream as a band member

IN YOUR teenage years did you ever want to be in a band? Or indeed if you are in your teenage years do you want to be in some sort of band?

About three months ago some friends and I thought it would be a laugh to start up our own Indie band, it was for pure fun and we did not expect to be performing or any such thing so soon. Alan was to play drums, Matt on bass and Josh on guitar.

When I first started writing this column I made a small reference to my band 'Snakes and Tygers' since then we have changed our name to 'Innocent Faces', which was taken from a passage of 'A Picture of Dorian Gray' by Oscar Wilde.

I would now like to give you a little insight into what the band is getting up to and hopefully pass on some sort of advice.

Once the band had formed we created a demo which Josh Rees (our astounding guitarist) and I shaped using what we had learnt from taking Music Technology for our A Levels.

I must admit after we gave our demos to numerous pubs around Horsham we did not get any calls back until the Boar's Head in Horsham asked us to perform for free on a Tuesday night.

We played this slot for a couple of months until Dave the manager asked us to play Saturday nights with payment.

We still have this slot every Saturday night but from this a gate seemed to open.

In the past month we played a gig in Horsham Park for the 'Kidz Stuff' Festival, played in our own boarding house to relieve exam stress and have been given the opportunity to perform in Tunbridge Wells for numerous gigs.

I suppose that helpful advice to be handed down from what we experienced so far is:

Never pass down a gig

Enjoy every moment when you are playing.

Huge thanks are always thrown to our friends who make it to our performances.

It is always good to have the support of your friends. A mention should be made of the 'band photographer' Miffy Fisher who, as a fellow Storrington resident, has made a huge effort to support us on our journey so far.

With exams upon me at the moment I am revising hard but still have the chance to carry on with the band which is worth every strum of the guitar.
