Great success at Ingfield Manor fete

HAPPILY the weather was great on Sunday – it was the day of the Friends of Ingfield Manor School's summer fete.

For those readers who don't know, Ingfield Manor, which is located in Five Oaks, Billingshurst, is run by Scope, the disability charity whose focus is people with cerebral palsy.

It's a residential and day school with a well-deserved national reputation and an outstanding Ofsted report and I'm proud that it's based in my constituency.

Last year they held a competition to design my Christmas card and I'm delighted that they have accepted the challenge again for this year!

Sunday, however, was all about raising money and having fun and it was certainly a great success on both counts – around 14,500 was raised and the money is still coming in.

Dame Vera Lynn and Ben Elton opened the festivities and enjoyed the afternoon as much as the children, families, friends and thousands of local people who turned out and made the day such a success.

The money raised will be used for a variety of things – whether it's new equipment, facilities or excursions.

Congratulations to all the friends of the school, the children and the staff – everyone who worked so hard to make the day the success that it was.

That evening I had the intimidating experience of speaking in Christs Hospital chapel – packed with a thousand students and staff! I talked about Rwanda and the trip I made with so many other volunteers last year. I'm not going this year but two of my children will be teaching English, as I did last year.

It's always a thrill to visit Christs Hospital – another amazing institution with a national reputation, providing a brilliant education for kids from disadvantaged backgrounds.

I had another opportunity to meet local people last week but this time it was in Westminster and it was the annual 'tea on the terrace' event for Sussex Enterprise members.

For the last few years I've sponsored the event which enables members to enjoy a summery tea on the terrace of the House of Commons.

Of course it's a cheerful event but more importantly it's an opportunity for members of the local business community to get together and discuss local and national issues that affect them and their staff.

If any readers would like me to pay a visit to their business, please don't hesitate to get in touch with my Westminster office on: 0207 219 2494.
