Charities set to benefit from text project

LIFE Discovery, Colgate Playgroup, The Rotary Club of Horsham Benevolent Fund, The Supporters of Castlewood School, The Child Memorial Village Hall.

This is just a handful from among the charitable organisations in Horsham that are currently using JustTextGiving - the new giving tool devised by Vodafone on a not-for-profit basis.

It’s a service that allows charities and individuals to raise money via text messages and provides a free, swift and convenient means of fundraising.

The service is free to set up, with every penny donated going to the charity, and works by allowing individuals to make donations by text message.

Donations can be made by the customers of any network provider without network charges and gift aid can also be claimed on each donation.

The hope is that setting up this service will encourage charitable donations, particularly among the younger generation who are comfortable using mobile technology.

You could say that for the charity sector it’s the next logical step in the march of progress – that concept so beloved of our Victorian ancestors.

The really good news is that it is estimated text donations could be worth £96m annually by 2014.

And so I want to highlight the opportunity for all registered charities and individuals raising money for those charities in my constituency, to take full advantage of this service by registering for a unique 6-digit Vodafone Individual Code text code and following the simple instructions at www.justtextgiving.co.uk

For the avoidance of doubt, let me reiterate that Vodafone does not profit from the service.

On a separate but not wholly unconnected note, Transport Secretary Justine Greening announced on January 10 that the Government had decided to go ahead with the High Speed 2 rail network.

A new high-speed rail network will provide Britain with the additional train seats, connections and speed to stay ahead of the congestion challenge and help create jobs, growth and prosperity for the entire country.

More than a century ago the Victorians built railways that continue to serve us to this day.

And just over 50 years ago the post-war generation chose to invest in motorways, bringing higher road capacity and faster journeys to millions.

Both transformed the economic and social fabric of this country.

HS2 is our generation’s investment in Britain’s future.
