West Chiltington & Thakeham were singing in the rain after securing promotion to the Sussex League for the first time in their history.

Tim Monday’s side went into the final game of the West Sussex Invitation League on Saturday in a Division 1 title and promotion shoot-out with Littlehampton.

Leaders West Chilt lead their second-placed visitors by four points going into the final fixture and with the match being abandoned due to the rain after Littlehampton had completed their innings of 144-9, the champions were crowned in the rain.

They lifted the title with nine wins from 18 games having achieved a haul of 374 points and Monday, who captained Wisborough Green to the same title in Division 1, said: “I’d like to thank everyone at the club who has made this possible.

“Littlehampton will look at games where they dropped points as of course we would have done had we been denied and if they continue on their upward trajectory, they’ll be back in the Sussex League very soon no doubt.

“However, today was our day and we’re a tight knit group of players many of whom have come through the colts’ section. We have an energetic committee and of course, some of the best facilities in West Sussex for cricket now.

“We’ll be looking to add one or two to our squad to ensure we compete next year but let’s enjoy this moment before we do any of that.”

West Chilt chairman Neil Miller was delighted to achieve his dream of making the step up into the Sussex League following their rivals Southwater, and Wisborough Green.

He said: “I always wanted to achieve County League cricket at the club whilst I was chairman and now it’s a reality, it will take some days to sink in.

“There’s been nothing like it before at this club and we’re keen not to come straight back down. Southwater and Portslade have shown what’s possible.”
