Celebrating Human Rights in Horsham

On a beautiful sunny Saturday morning members of Horsham Amnesty group enjoyed the shade of the Peace Tree in the Carfax.

This stop on their Human Rights Walk celebrated Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security.

The group remembered both those who fought and died for our peace and security as well as today’s refugees fleeing wars and famine.

Other stops on the walk included the Friends Meeting House, illustrating freedom of thought, conscience and religion. Here they recalled the imprisonment in 1665 of Quaker, Thomas Laycock who was jailed in Horsham for preaching.

The walk ended at the offices of the West Sussex County Times whose staff support the group’s campaign to free journalist, Eskinder Nega, imprisoned in Ethiopia calling for freedom of expression in that country.

The success of the walk in raising awareness of human rights and the interest of the public who stopped to talk has encouraged the group to consider making this an annual event.
