Four gold prizes for cake firm
A DYNAMIC cake company in Ashington has notched up success in the food industry's Oscars.
Kate's Cakes won four gold prizes at national UK competition the Great Taste Awards.
This recognition will help the business build on its rapidly expanding brand.
Kate's Cakes European account manager Frank Bird said: "We are delighted to win these four Great Taste Awards.
"The Great Taste Awards are a recognised stamp of excellence for our products and a reflection of our constant desire to produce the best tasting cakes by sourcing and using only the finest ingredients.
"It's particularly welcome to receive praise for our newest range, You Can, which caters especially for people who suffer from food allergies or intolerances with a selection of gluten, dairy and wheat free cakes.
"Winning the prestigious gold star awards is a recognition of all the creative skill and unstinting hard work that makes Kate's Cakes the success story that it is today."
The new wheat free choc and nut cereal bar and the dairy free muesli bar, both from the You Can range, were singled out for gold taste awards.
And both the dairy free granola bar and the chocolate fudge cake were given a gold taste award.
The Great Taste Awards saw 4,800 entries blind tasted by teams of experts, with the lucky winners being assessed by at least three teams by the time they earned gold.
This year's judges included Alex James, bass player with Blur, chef Mark Hix, Charles Campion from Evening Standard & The Independent, Tom Parker-Bowles of UKTV Food's Market Kitchen, and national food journalist Fiona Sims.
Judge and food critic Charles Campion added: "This competition has really come of age, and year by year the standard of entries gets higher and higher.
"To win a gold at the Great Taste Awards is a terrific achievement."
The company announced its success at the awards, which took place in August, this week.
Kate's Cakes supplies some of the best known global brands including: Starbucks, M&S, Pret A Manger and Waitrose, in addition to producing its own range.
Its products can also be found in high street coffee bars, delis, hotels, pub chains and attraction parks across the country.
The company, which is based just off the A24, hand makes and bakes in small batches, avoiding using GMO ingredients, hydrogenated fats, unnecessary flavourings and preservatives, whilst selecting only natural ingredients and free-range eggs.
