Firms shortlisted for awards

BUSINESSES serving the Horsham area have been shortlisted in a prestigious rural awards scheme.

In total, three companies from Pulborough, Ockley and Shipley will compete in The Countryside Alliance Awards.

They have made it through to the South East section but still have nine other contenders to see off.

Popular butcher's MJ Suter in Pulborough's Lower Street sells locally and responsibly sourced meat of the highest quality.

They are up for the category of local food finalists.

Also in their category is busy Village Greens Farm Shop in Coles Lane, Ockley.

Food is sourced locally and the business even grows its own.

Meanwhile, The Countryman Inn at Shipley is in the running for Daily Telegraph traditional business finalists.

For over 20 years Alan Vaughan, who owns the cosy pub in Countryman Lane, has not wavered in his support of local food producers.

All the food on the menu is from the immediate area and it has close working relationships with many of the farms and local growers.

Countryside Alliance South East regional director Michelle Nudds said: "There are some cracking finalists in this line up and I am very confident that there are a few who are in with a chance of going all the way in the all-UK final.

"This list represents the best of the region's produce, skills, enterprise and community spirit and choosing a winner in each category is going to be very, very hard."

The Countryside Alliance Awards celebrate the characters, skills, traditions and enterprise of the countryside.

Regional winners will be announced early in 2009.

National winners will be revealed at a House of Lords reception on March 18 next year.
