Businesses advised to check rate relief

WEST Sussex County Council is urging all small businesses to check if they're entitled to small business rate relief to help them through the tough times of the recession.

In addition, the Government recently announced that businesses will be able to spread the payments of business rates over three years. This year business rates are increasing by five per cent, which could have a major impact on businesses already suffering from cash-flow problems.

County Council Leader Henry Smith said: "West Sussex has many small businesses, some of which may be struggling to cope during the recession. If they feel deferring business rate payments would be beneficial to them, I would urge them to contact their local District or Borough Council to find out more.

"The County Council has developed a series of web pages as part of the 'Keep West Sussex Working' initiative to provide guidance and advice in all areas to businesses and individuals."

Applications for business rate relief are dealt with by the relevant district or borough council as the billing authority.

The County Council's 'Keep West Sussex Working' web pages have been updated to give information on business rate relief and to direct businesses to their relevant local billing authority.

The web pages also have information and useful links on themes such as economic development and regeneration, general help and advice, details of local Chambers of Commerce and other organisations, and ideas for how to cut costs with the West Sussex Sustainable Business Partnership.

Henry added: "The County Council has given an extra 80,000 funding to Business Link Sussex under the 'Keep West Sussex Working' initiative, to provide West Sussex businesses with reviews to see how they can save money and develop during the economic downturn.

"We've also given an additional 100,000 package to West Sussex Citizens Advice Bureaux to help people who need debt advice."
