Over seventy carers attended the celebration launch of Carers Support West Sussex in the glorious and sunny surroundings of Parham House and Gardens during Carers Week in June.

Carers Support West Sussex, funded by West Sussex County Council, started in April has launched as the new combined county-wide service which coordinates local carers services within one charity.

Carers Support West Sussex was also delighted to announce that Dame Philippa Russell DBE had agreed to be the Charity’s Patron. Dame Philippa is Chair of the Government’s Standing Commission on Carers. A West Sussex Resident she is the parent of an adult son with a learning disability and she has wide contacts with voluntary and user organisations with an interest in disabled children, young people and their families and is a member of the Cross-Government Programme Board on the National Carers Strategy. She was made a Dame in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2009 for services to disabled children, young people and family carers.

Jennie Musgrove, Chief Executive of Carers Support West Sussex, said: “We are extremely fortunate that Dame Philippa has agreed to be our Charity Patron. Her vision, knowledge, experience and insight will be invaluable to us as we continue to develop Carers Support across the county.”

In her address Dame Philippa said how important support networks are for carers. This was a timely comment as Carers Week also saw the launch of the ‘West Sussex Carers Network and Carers Voice’ for carers to have their voice heard.

The aim of the easy access network is for carers to give feedback, stories and opinions, share information and support and be in touch with other carers.

Jane Brown, Locality Manager for Carers Support West Sussex, said “By becoming a member of the

‘West Sussex Carers Network and Carers Voice’ carers will have a stronger voice and be at the cutting edge of shaping support and services. We urge all carers who want to have a say to join us.”
