A glorious day drew the crowds to Ashington Festival on Saturday, when a colourful procession and plenty of entertainment marked this popular annual event.
Organisers branded the event as ‘the best ever’ following the bumper turnout and quality entertainment throughout the afternoon and evening, culminating in a superb firework display.
The carnival began at Foster Lane before moving along The Sands, Rectory Lane, London Road and Church Lane, which were lined with spectators.
Horndean Marching Band led the procession followed by Carnival Princess Sarah Shaw, attendants and pageboys.
Behind them were colourful floats and walking groups, Majorettes, people and children in fancy dress, clowns and vintage vehicles.
All the old favourites were there, plus some top class acts in the evening. Harris Brothers Funfair, a fun dog show sponsored by Arun Veterinary Group, a car boot sale, a flower show, craft, charity and animal stalls, sideshows, classic and vintage vehicles plus refreshments, contributed to the success.
Organiser Margaret Alfold, said: “It was an outstanding success. The weather was perfect and the crowds came. Everyone enjoyed the day, which has to be the best yet. We couldn’t have done this without the magnificent support of our many sponsors and we are really indebted to them. People came not only from the village but a wide area around to make this a memorable event.”
