ART: Exhibition at King Edward Hall

PRESIDENT Obama has made it to the Adventurer's Art Club's 56th exhibition at King Edward Hall, Lindfield.

The president is depicted in profile looking pensive and is the work of Monica Moore who specialises in pastel portraits and still life.

Bigger than ever with some 250 exhibits, most of those showing work are amateurs in the best sense, although there are some professionals who raise the bar.

Valerie Le Maistre's sculpted figures are lyrical and full of movement, and Sheila Southwell is exhibiting porcelain.

The far end of the hall is dominated by John Anthony Quinn's train and in contrast a puffing slow moving road engine. They have a meticulous sense of detail.

Maureen Welfare's The Barter, is a dusty desert scene smoothly worked in a subtle oil colour scheme that had me thinking back to Lawrence of Arabia. Brian S. Jones glimpse of men in a small boat caught in the rising sun has a similar atmospheric quality.

Michael Berry's view of Cologne Cathedral shows its architectural splendour from the unusual angle of a bridge, while another exhibitor with an eye for architecture is Mike Rowell's fine but neglected door in an Italian town street.

Clearly with his understated compositions the gifted Hagop K. Kasparian has lost none of his skills. A regular exhibitor for many years his technique is as sound and truthful as ever.

Animals and birds have not been forgotten. Joanne Butt's Looking at You features a tiger that seems about to leap out at the viewer is contrasted, not with a chaffinch on the orchard bough, but a chipper robin. Of the rest I fancy the humour of Lynne Tomes' badgers in bluebells.

A collection of miniatures in a glass case is not to be missed for the sharpness and clarity of these tiny gems.

Most of the work is well shown on white screens and in these cash-strapped days sales at the private viewing were unexpectedly good.

Visitors are invited to choose their favourite exhibit as are members of the club and the results will be announced later.

The show continues until August 8.
