Anniversaries and reunions in 1996

They say the older you get, the faster time passes. They're right.

These pictures were taken from the County Times archive of 1996 which, to those of us with clear memories of things such as the long, hot summer of 76 and Bucks Fizz winning the Eurovision Song Contest, was only yesterday.

To some of the younger souls in the pictures, though, 20 years was almost a lifetime ago.

Take the children from the Robin Hood Nursery, in Southwater. The are all in their twenties now and probably don’t remember the picture being taken. Reading the report, though, they appear to have had a really good time.

The occasion was the nursery’s 10th birthday and there was cake, face painting, dancing and bouncing – lots of bouncing – on a bouncy castle.

The grown-ups in the picture are: Hilary Seymour, Marilyn Thair, principal Judith Harrison, Sandra Martin and Jan Stimpson. At the front, dressed as Robin Hood and a cat are Matthew Bateman and Katie Godsland.

Over at Greenway School, a bunch of old schoolmates got together for a reunion. It had been 25 years since they had attended the school together and organiser Alan Whittingham was delighted when their former headteacher, Don Shaw, and teacher WK Campbell joined them in their old classroom.

Are there any plans for the gang to meet up again in five years for their 50-year reunion?

While the Greenway pals were remembering the past, youngsters at Shipley School were fundraising for the future. Despite torrential rain which made much of the school fete a wash-out, they still managed to raise an amazing £1,600 for a new multi-media computer.

Funnily enough, the refreshments tent proved really popular as people sipped their tea and sheltered from the rain – and they somehow managed to keep the barbecue going.

Our final picture shows a group of rampaging Vikings who swarmed into Henfield, armed to the teeth.

Despite their rather aggressive appearance, they proved to be pretty decent chaps and refrained from any pillaging.

Quite the opposite actually.

They were members of the Dragons Head Warriors and they locked swords in mock battle to help raise £2,500 for St Peter’s School, Henfield, which was in the process of refurbishing its library.
