Three leisure centres in the Horsham District have spent over £43,000 in 2010 on making their facilities more accessible for people with disabilities. The project was funded by Aiming High for Disabled Children following a joint initiative by Horsham District Council, DC Leisure and the Leisure Centres’ operators.

The changing facilities at The Pavilions In The Park, Broadbridge Heath and Billingshurst Leisure Centres now benefit from overhead hoists with height adjustable shower and changing stretchers. The pools also have compatible pool chairs to fit the existing pool hoists and specially-made foam inserts to support younger children with low mobility.

Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre has benefited from additional adaptations including door retainers to make access throughout the site easier, foam padded steps and a portable hoist to enable disabled users to access the trampolines.

The project is just a small part of Horsham District Council and DC Leisure’s commitment to making leisure venues in the District accessible for all.

In addition to the changing room and building adaptations the centres now operate a number of activities specifically for disabled persons, these include swim lessons at The Pavilions In The Park and Billingshurst Leisure Centre, and Trampolining and Rebound Therapy at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre.

The Pavilions In The Park is now an ‘Inclusive Fitness Initiative’ accredited site where the kinetika gym has been recognised for its accessible facilities, inclusive fitness equipment and staff training.
