THE TEENAGER who killed Ricky Butler had practised using the nunchuk but 'wasn't really good' with it a witness said.
Richard Martin, 19, of Heath Way, Horsham, killed Ricky with a nunchuk martial arts weapon outside a party in Horsham last year.
Martin has admitted carrying out the attack but denies murder, saying he did not intend to kill Ricky.
He also denies wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to another teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons.
Nathan Gray, who was a friend of Martin's at the time, told the court that Martin kept the nunchuk hanging on a hook on his bedroom wall.
Prosecutor Charles Miskin QC asked him: "Had you seen him using them in practise?"
"A couple of times," said Mr Gray, "But he wasn't really good with them."
Mr Miskin asked: "Why did you think he wasn't very good with them?"
Mr Gray told him: "Because you're not meant to hit yourself."
He said Martin had 'an interest' in martial arts.
Prosecutors are due to finish presenting their case this afternoon.
The trial, at Lewes Crown Court, continues.
